Contemporary House For Sale: Exeter, Devon

17 Aug
August 17, 2012

I haven’t posted a contemporary house for sale in a little while so thought it was long overdue.

Today I’ve got this contemporary house in Exeter, Devon. The current owners built the property 7 years ago, which was designed by the architect Tim Williamson – who can be found at Heighfield Way Associates. The property has 5 bedrooms as well as a one bedroom self-contained au pair flat. There is also planning permission for coach house accommodation to the rear.

Inside the materials palette has been limited to oak, travertine and glass to create the interior feel with clever use of space such as interior windows and glass panel balconies. The floors are solid oak with underfloor heating individually controlled in each room and there is also a Passivent system that the property benefits from.

Further details can be found here along with the guide price of £1,650,000.

Converted Corn Mill for Sale: Lupton, Cumbria

14 Aug
August 14, 2012

A Grade II Listed (I’m not going out of my way to find Grad II listed buildings) converted corn mill for sale overlooking mill pond with a river running through the gardens.

It was bought lying derelict by the current owners and carefully rebuilt and converted. Now ready for some cosmetic updating this is an opportunity to put your own stamp on a piece of history and  create a beautiful house in a beautiful setting.

Outside there’s a double garage with bathing platform (?) attached to the back as it borders an impressive 0.39 acre mill pond. At the far end is a boathouse and summer house. The gardens  offer a mix of formal and informal, lightly wooded in places with ‘Lupton Beck’ forming the southern border. In all, it has around 1.35 acres.

There is a cobbled parking area to the front of the property, garden with mill stone with Lupton Mill carving. Double garage (6.03m x 5.9m [19’9 x 19’5]) to the rear over the mill pond with a small wooden jetty. A pathway borders the pond and leads to a lightly wooded area with boathouse, store and summerhouse. Lower flagged terrace and large level lawn with mature trees, rear courtyard with log store. Finally a waterfall flowing into ‘Lupton Beck’ which forms the southerly boundary.

The property has a guide price of £725,000, which considering it needs ‘cosmetic updating’ seems a little much to me. However, you can view it here.

Renovation Project: Former School House For Sale – Plymouth,UK

13 Aug
August 13, 2012

A grade II* listed former school house for sale. This property situated in Plympton St Maurice, Plymouth was originally built in 1664 in the Jacobean style which was then renovated at around 1870.

This building could make an absolutely stunning home if it were renovated to its full potential. I particularly like the arches on the ground floor and would look particularly good if they were filled with glass panels so that it could be used as a fully functioning level of the property. That being said, what I and you may think is a good idea is completely different to what planners think is a good idea. For those not aware, the asterisk denotes a particularly important building of more than special interest.

Finally, the building is in a secluded south facing location in a conservation area and the Garden area is mainly laid to lawn together with a large car park for approximately 16 cars.

Offers are invited in the region of £250,000 for the freehold with further details available here.

Inspiration: Lake Shore Drive House – Chicago, Illinois

August 10, 2012

Wheeler Kearns Architects have designed the Lake Shore Drive House in Chicago, Illinois.

Located in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago, this single family residence on Lake Shore Drive opens directly onto the parkway with unobstructed views of Lake Michigan. The house takes its form from its site; the base of the residence is rendered as a solid mass, forming a plinth that grounds the house on its prominent corner location.  The plinth is carved into and becomes more open towards the lake side of the house.  An interlocking volume that rises from the plinth reinforces the opening toward the lake; as the volume springs from the plinth, a double-high aperture is created that provides an expansive view from the living room towards Lake Michigan.

The split-level plan creates spaces of various scales and experiences that share in the east view towards the park and lake.
